2017 National Photographic Portrait Prize

Originally titled ‘Lucinda with stung eye, 2016’  I was honoured that my portrait was a finalist in this year’s National Photographic Portrait Prize.  Intended as an homage to Sally Mann’s ’Damaged Child, 1984  I didn’t want to make the connection between the two works too obvious. Only later did I read Mann’s memoir Hold Still and learn that her work was itself an homage to Dorothea Lange’s Damaged Child, Shacktown, Elm Grove, Oklahoma 1936. If exhibited again I shall show it with the title Damaged Child 2016.

The exhibition runs from 1 April 2017 to 17 June 2017 at the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.
